Scroll down to read about some of my
learning design projects.
Featured projects showcasing some of my design skills:
eLearning: "Building Community in the World Language Classroom"
eLearning: "The Seal of Biliteracy"
ILT: "Using Short Films in the World Language Classroom"
VILT: "Making Remote Meetings Interactive and Collaborative with Jamboard"
Video: "The UDL Journey"
eLearning Project: "Building Community in the World Language Classroom"
A course about the importance and benefits of prioritizing community building and relationships in the World Language classroom and practical strategies to do so. Created using Rise 360. It features video, knowledge checks, visuals and links to resources. Click on the image to view the course.
Challenge: Language teachers face what can seem like conflicting expectations: teach in the target language at least 90% of the time and lower student anxiety to build student confidence.
Solution: Create a training course to help language teachers understand the importance of building community and relationships in their classrooms and learn effective and actionable strategies to improve their own practice.
Process: I researched theories and best practices around community building, relationships and language acquisition. I incorporated new practices in my own classroom and gathered data. Finally, I created this professional development training course and presented it as part of a district wide professional development conference.
Impact: During the following semester and school year, teachers successfully incorporated several strategies and practices from the training. Anecdotal evidence shows that learner buy-in and outcomes were improved as a result.
eLearning Project: "The Seal of Biliteracy"
A lesson explaining the Seal of Biliteracy. Created using Articulate Storyline 360. Features visual aids, knowledge checks and links to resources. The full project is available to view on request.
Challenge: A school district in Oregon had not yet started offering the Seal of Biliteracy. The stakeholders (administrators, teachers, counselors and parents) knew very little about the Seal of Biliteracy, the benefits and value it provides, or how to go about implementing it.
Solution: Create a presentation to inform stakeholders about the Oregon State Seal of Biliteracy to inform them and support next steps.
Process: I researched the Seal of Biliteracy and consulted with various SME's through my professional network. I created a slide presentation using the information. I invited key stakeholders with decision-making power, and presented the information as an Instructor Led Training. The presentation is now available as an eLearning training.
Impact: The Oregon State Seal of Biliteracy was implemented in the school district and since then over 130 students have graduated with the Seal of Biliteracy, and over 100 more will this spring.
Instructor Led Training: "Using Short Films in the World Language Classroom"
This training includes a PowerPoint presentation and supplemental materials. Features: Group participation, video, and supplemental materials. Full presentation available upon request.
Job Aid Infographic
"6 Tips for Using Film in the World Language Classroom"
I created this infographic using Piktochart. It can accompany the presentation as a job aid or stand alone, and has a link to more resources.
Challenge: Teachers of World Languages know that best practices include providing copious amounts of comprehensible input for their learners, while at the same time providing relevant, engaging and authentic content. This can be an overwhelming task.
Solution: Provide training on the use of short films in the World Language Classroom that offers effective and actionable strategies and resources.
Process: I researched best practices around the use of film in language classes and strategies for finding appropriate films and scaffolding the content for learners. I created a multi-media slide presentation and supplemental learning materials. I presented the training as an Instructor Led Training at two professional conferences.
Impact: Teachers reported back to me that they found the information very helpful and useful and that they had incorporated the practices into their own teaching successfully. Anecdotal evidence suggests that learner outcomes were positively impacted.
Virtual Instructor Led Training: "Making Remote Meetings Interactive and Collaborative with Jamboard"
This training includes a PowerPoint presentation with embedded screencast videos, as well as supplemental materials. This presentation is still in progress.
Challenge: During the COVID-19 pandemic, the workplace shifted to an online remote setting for many workers. The virtual conference meeting space is a much less interactive and collaborative way of conducting team meetings, and therefore can be less effective.
Solution: The Google Jamboard app is an excellent tool for people to collaborate in real time in creative and engaging ways. However, it tends to be used most often as an online instructional tool and is not as widely known and used by professional and workplace teams. I am creating this Virtual Instructor Led Training to show professional and workplace team leaders how they can incorporate Jamboard into their remote meetings to increase participant engagement.
Process: I'm creating a presentation using Articulate 360 that incorporates screencasted video and interactive features to demonstrate how to use Jamboard and offer suggestions for a variety of ways to incorporate it into meetings. This presentation is still in progress.
Video: "The UDL Journey"
This short video created using Powtoon is an introduction to UDL (Universal Design for Learning). Click to watch the video. I have used Powtoon to create many instructional videos, which are available to view upon request.
Challenge: A new teacher that I was coaching had not yet completed the training on UDL, but I wanted to give her an introduction so she could begin thinking about the shifts in her practice that she could make and also motivate her to start the training as soon as possible.
Solution: I decided to create a short but engaging video that introduced her to UDL.
Process: I used Powtoon to create a short introductory and motivational video. I began by reviewing my previous knowledge of UDL and creating an outline/storyboard. I found a project template on Powtoon that aligned thematically with the concept of a learning journey, and used it as the basis for the creation of the video, using various Powtoon tools to illustrate the key elements of UDL.
